Sell Your Morgan Silver Dollars in
San Jose and the Bay Area

We buy Morgan dollars in all conditions – inherited, collected, or found in an old safe. We pay based on actual numismatic value, not just silver weight. Every coin evaluated individually by date, mintmark, and condition.

Understanding Value

What Determines the Value of a Morgan Silver Dollar?

Not all Morgan dollars are equal. A common 1921 Morgan may be worth $25. An 1893-S in AU condition could be worth $5,000 or more. Three factors drive the difference.

01

Date & Mintmark

Morgan dollars were minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. They were produced at five different mints, each identified by a small letter (mintmark) on the reverse of the coin:

  • No mintmark: Philadelphia. The most common mint for Morgans.
  • S (San Francisco): Very common in Bay Area collections because of the local mint. Most S-mint Morgans are affordable, but certain dates like the 1893-S are among the rarest and most valuable of all Morgan dollars.
  • O (New Orleans): Moderate availability. Some dates carry premiums.
  • CC (Carson City): The most sought-after mintmark. All Carson City Morgans carry a premium, and rare dates like the 1889-CC and 1893-CC can be worth thousands.
  • D (Denver): Only minted in 1921. Common.

02

Condition (Grade)

Coins are graded on a scale from 1 (barely identifiable) to 70 (perfect). The difference between a VF-30 and an MS-65 Morgan of the same date can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars. We use the same grading standards as PCGS and NGC to assess condition accurately.

Coins that have already been professionally graded and slabbed by PCGS or NGC typically command higher prices because the grade is certified. We buy both graded (slabbed) and ungraded (raw) Morgan dollars.

03

Market Demand

Collector demand fluctuates. Key dates and high-grade coins tend to hold or increase in value over time. Common dates follow silver prices more closely.

We base our offers on real-time market data, recent auction results, and current dealer pricing.

Bay Area Spotlight

San Francisco Mint Morgans: Common in Bay Area Collections

If you live in the Bay Area, there’s a good chance your Morgan dollars carry the “S” mintmark from the San Francisco Mint — one of the largest producers of Morgans, especially prevalent in local collections and inherited estates.

Most S-mint Morgans are common dates and trade near their silver value in circulated condition. But some notable exceptions make individual evaluation essential.

Do not assume all S-mint Morgans are common. Send us photos and we will identify the dates and give you an honest assessment.

1893-S:
Key Date

The Crown Jewel
The key date of the entire Morgan series. Extremely rare and valuable even in low grades — worth $2,000 to well over $100,000 depending on condition.

1892-S
1894-S
1895-S

Better S-Mint Dates
These carry meaningful premiums above common S-mint coins. Worth having individually evaluated rather than treating as common.

1878-S
1st YEAR

First Year of Issue
The inaugural Morgan dollar. Carries a slight premium, especially in uncirculated condition. Collectable for historical significance.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends entirely on the date, mintmark, and condition. A common 1921 Morgan in average circulated condition is worth about $25 to $35. A rare key date like the 1893-S can be worth thousands. The only way to know for sure is to have it evaluated by an expert. Text us a photo at (415) 952-6467 for a quick assessment.

Look at the reverse (back) of the coin, just below the eagle's tail feathers and above the "DO" in "DOLLAR." You will see a small letter: S (San Francisco), O (New Orleans), CC (Carson City), or D (Denver). If there is no letter, the coin was minted in Philadelphia.

All Morgan dollars have value, but not all are rare. Common dates in circulated condition are worth their silver content plus a small premium (roughly $25 to $40). Rare dates, Carson City mintmarks, and high-grade examples can be worth hundreds or thousands. We evaluate each coin individually to give you an accurate value.

No. Cleaning coins almost always reduces their value. Even if they look tarnished or dull, leave them as they are. Collectors and dealers prefer original, uncleaned surfaces. For more on this topic, see our guide on how to clean old coins (which explains why you should not).

Yes. We buy Morgan dollars in any condition, including cleaned, scratched, bent, or otherwise impaired coins. The offer will reflect the condition, but we still make fair offers on problem coins.

Absolutely. Graded (slabbed) Morgan dollars are faster to evaluate and typically command higher prices than raw coins. Bring the slabs and we will make an offer based on the certified grade and current market pricing.

Yes. But unlike some dealers who offer a flat per-coin price for bulk lots, we go through each coin individually. Mixed-date bags and rolls often contain better dates that are worth significantly more than common coins. Our coin-by-coin approach ensures you get paid for what you actually have.

Same day. Once you accept our offer, we pay immediately via cash, check, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or bank transfer. In most cases, funds are in your account before you leave.
